St Mary's Lighthouse
St Mary's Lighthouse near Whitley Bay in Tyne and Wear in the North East of England, and the adjacent keepers' residences, were built in 1898 on the site of an 11th-century chapel whose monks had used a lantern to warn ships of the rocks on which they stand. The lighthouse has the distinction of being the last Trinity House beacon to be lit using paraffin. Electrification arrived in 1977, but the light was decommissioned seven years later.
