Moon detail 60% 20240416
Nicely contrasting areas in this detail from my latest mosaic of the waxing 60% Moon, made on the night of 2024 April 16. The low sunlight throws into striking relief the peaks of the Alpes, Caucasus and Apenninus 'montes' that fringe the huge Imbrium Basin, the eastern part of which is visible on the left, with the magnificent 82km wide Archimedes crater. They are in stark contrast to the smooth lava plains of Mare Serenitatis on the right, which has almost no craters - the most obvious one being Bessel, which is 15km in diameter. The darker outer areas of the ‘mare’ are older lavas than the central portion. The larger crater on its upper right edge is Posidonius; the one towards the top of my image is Aristoteles.
