WWII Royal Air Force fighter 'ace' James Edgar "Johnnie" Johnson flew Spitfire Mk IX EN398 during 1943. As a wing commander he had his initials as its code letters, JE-J. Depicted here climbing vertically into a sunlit sky, displaying the beautifully evolving lines of RJ Mitchell's iconic design.
