The last time that the RAF lost an aircraft as a result of an air-to-air engagement in combat was the shooting down of a Cyprus-based English Electric Canberra PR 7, WH799 of 58 Squadron, by Syrian air force Gloster Meteor F8 fighters on the Syria-Lebanon border during the Suez Crisis of 1956.
This depiction was commissioned for the RAF Memorial Flight Club magazine to mark the 60th anniversary of the encounter during which the navigator, 26-year-old Flying Officer Roy Urquhart-Pullen, was killed.
