The Hawker Typhoon (Tiffy in RAF slang) was designed by the legendary Sydney Camm as an interceptor but did not live up to expectations against the Luftwaffe's Focke-Wulf Fw 190 except at low altitude. From 1943 however it evolved into a fearsome ground-attack aircraft, cleared to carry two 500lb and later 1,000lb bombs, or up to eight rocket projectiles.
The picture depicts Typhoons from No. 247 (China British) Squadron, sporting D-Day invasion stripes, beginning an attack dive in June 1944.
