The last time that the RAF lost an aircraft as a result of an air-to-air engagement in combat was the shooting down of a Cyprus-based English Electric Canberra PR 7, WH799 of 58 Squadron, by Syrian air force Gloster Meteor F8 fighters on the Syria-Lebanon border during the Suez Crisis of 1956.
This is the black and white version of a depiction that was commissioned for the RAF Memorial Flight Club magazine to mark the 60th anniversary of the encounter during which the navigator, 26-year-old Flying Officer Roy Urquhart-Pullen, was killed.
